Addiction and Dependence to Prescribed (POM) or Over The Counter (OTC) Medication

Addiction Intervention Management can provide assessment and support to possible dependent to prescribed (POM) or over the counter medication (OTC).

Medication addiction may be a physical issue, where your body lets you know it needs the medication by giving you symptoms of withdrawal, it may also be a psychological issue, requiring additional support with mental health needs such as managing anxiety, feeling low in mood or maybe raising self esteem and confidence to achieve daily tasks without taking certain medications inappropriately.

Advice on addiction to opiate based medications and detox from opiates can be found on this site.

Some medications are dangerous to stop abruptly and AIM do not recommend this action.  As a professional courtesy, we would contact the prescriber of the medication being taken to inform of our actions, this is usually your GP and we will discuss this during an assessment.

Throughout any interventions, you will remain the focus of our treatment and we will be moving at your pace.  There is no hurry or rush to complete any treatment and each person is supported on their individual requirements

Some medications may cause an element of physical dependence, or a feeling of needing to take more than you should or maybe more often than prescribed.

Common medications that may cause this effect are used for pain relief or to help you feel calm and settled (such as opiates or tranquilisers / hypnotics).

These medications are often prescribed (POM) to you, but some are obtained in other ways, including buying them over the counter (OTC) at a chemist.

Medication addiction, wether they are prescribed, purchased over the counter or taking illicitly is a growing problem reported by GPs. People often become addicited to opiates such as codeine or tranquilisers such as diazepam. For a private and confidential assessment, support and advice on how to safely reduce and discontinue dependence to medicines contact AIM
